No change is to be reported in the Top 20 of the WTA ranking, still led by Iga Swiatek. Caroline Garcia remains the best Frenchwoman, but Clara Burel is making good progress.
In this post-Wimbledon week when only the small WTA 250 tournaments in Palermo and Budapest were on the program, the ranking of women’s tennis was obviously not upset. The twenty best players in the world retain their position, starting with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, still in the lead with 470 points over Aryna Sabalenka. This week, the Pole is playing at home, in Warsaw, and will have the opportunity to increase her lead, especially as she will be the only Top 15 player present on the courts. Defending champion in Warsaw, Caroline Garcia did not make the trip, and is therefore guaranteed to lose 280 points next Monday, and her place as world No. 5, in favor of Ons Jabeur, who will gain a place without playing. The Frenchwoman will resume competition next week in Washington, where she will be seeded No. 2 behind Jessica Pegula. The two winners of this Sunday, Qinwen Zheng in Palermo and Timofeeva in Budapest, gain respectively two (24th) and 117 places (129th) in the standings.
Les Bleues in force in Lausanne
As for the other French women, Varvara Gracheva remains 43rd and Alizé Cornet loses two places to find himself 70th. On the other hand, Clara Burel is having a good summer, and here she is 84th. The 22-year-old player, after winning the ITF tournament in Montpellier, made it to the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Palermo, which allowed her to gain ten places. This week, she will be at the Lausanne tournament, with many compatriots: Diane Parry (the fifth French player in the Top 100), Léolia Jeanjean, Alizé Cornet and Fiona Ferro.
