Since Ilkay Gündogan decided to leave him this summer to join FC Barcelona, Manchester City decided to go on the offensive to recover Frenkie De Jong.
After seven years of good and loyal service to Manchester City, Ilkay Gündogan has made the decision to turn the page. The German international thus withdrew on a historic hat-trick and a no less unprecedented victory for the Skyblues in the Champions League final (1-0, against Inter Milan). Wanting to see something else, the midfielder joined FC Barcelona, but his absence leaves a big void that Pep Guardiola wants to fill as soon as possible.
And to replace his ex-player, the Mancunian coach kept his eyes fixed on Barcelona. He would have the idea to attract a certain Frenkie de Jong. In the sights of Manchester United last summer, it could therefore be towards City that the Dutchman could land a year later. Under contract with Barça until June 2026, De Jong may not want to leave more than he did last year. But City may well have a strong argument.
Over 100 million
The financial power of the Saudi owner should, according to The Sun, allow Manchester to put around 105 million euros on the table. A sum that will inevitably make the eyes of Barcelona accountants shine since even if the accounts ended in the green for the last financial year, the forecasts are much less encouraging with regard to 2023-2024. The last word will once again go to Frenkie de Jong.
