A little over a week after the NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs officially announced the signing of the contract binding the Texas franchise to Victor Wembanyama, who had been selected in first position.
All that was missing was a signature at the bottom of a contract. On June 22, in Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, Victor Wembanyama became the first French player to be selected as number 1 in the NBA Draft. A few days after his defeat in the Betclic Elite finals against Monaco with Boulogne-Levallois, the native of Chesnay saw the San Antonio Spurs choose him to strengthen their squad. However, “Wemby” was not yet officially a Texas franchise player.
Everything changed on Saturday. Indeed, through a press release, the San Antonio Spurs officially announced the signing of the contract binding them to the French international (4 selections). However, “in accordance with team policy, the terms of the contract have not been announced”. An announcement that comes as the NBA franchises have an appointment this Monday in Sacramento for the “California Classic”, the first of two stages of the traditional Summer League.
Wembanyama probably in the high window
If the Spurs maintain total confidentiality concerning the duration of the contract binding Victor Wembanyama and his new team, but also the remuneration, the NBA regulations concerning the salaries of players selected during the Draft give very clear clues. Indeed, according to this “rookie scale”, the 19-year-old player has probably signed a contract for the next four seasons and valued at around 55 million dollars (50.4 million euros), i.e. the top of the window allowed under the budget cap imposed on franchises by the NBA. More specifically, Victor Wembanyama should receive 12.1 million dollars (11.1 million euros) for the 2023-2024 season then 12.8 million dollars (11.7 million euros) for the 2024 season. -2025.
Beyond that, there is talk of an option that the leaders of the San Antonio-based franchise could activate for the 2024-2025 season at 13.4 million dollars (12.3 million euros) then for the 2025 season. -2026 at 16.9 million dollars (15.5 million euros). However, it is possible that the player and his team will negotiate a new potentially more profitable contract for “Wemby” in the meantime.which should make its debut under its new colors on July 7 in Las Vegas.
