Luka Modric and his compatriot Dejan Lovren will have to explain themselves to the courts of their country. They are accused of perjury in a corruption trial in the Croatian championship.
The month of June does not end in the best way for Luka Modric. Ten days after Croatia failed against Spain in the final of the League of Nations, the veteran international was notified of his dismissal before the justice of his country. Like his compatriot Dejan Lovren, the Real Madrid player is charged with perjury.
The information is relayed Thursday by The Team which explains that this decision of the Croatian justice is linked to a corruption case that occurred in the Croatian championship. Luka Modric and Dejan Lovren had thus testified during the trial of the former boss of Dinamo Zagreb, Zdravko Mamic, which was held on the side of the city of Osijek. The two witnesses had mentioned their contracts with Dinamo as well as their respective transfers to Tottenham and Lyon.
Up to five years in prison
The sports media adds that “ the criminal offense of perjury is punishable by six months to five years in prison, according to the Croatian criminal code“. The Ballon d’Or 2018 and the defender of Olympique Lyonnais will therefore have to justify themselves and defend themselves in court. For his part, Zdravko Mamic had fled to Bosnia to escape the six and a half years in prison he had been sentenced to after the trial which had also seen the conviction of three other people.
