Lionel Messi erased a new record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo. The goal of the Argentinian on Saturday evening during the draw of PSG against Strasbourg (1-1), is not for nothing.
Even if they are both at the twilight of their careers, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo do not forget each other. While the Portuguese has been in exile in Saudi Arabia since leaving Manchester United last December, the Argentinian is pursuing his career in France, with Paris Saint-Germain, which he is expected to leave at the end of June. In the meantime, “la Pulga” has set a new record, held until then by its toughest adversary.
Traveling on Saturday evening near Strasbourg, Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain settled for a draw (1-1) which allowed them to validate the eleventh title of champion of France of the club of the capital. The only Parisian goal was scored by the 2022 world champion. The 496th achievement of his career since playing in one of the five major European championships (in this case, Spain and France).
Uncertain future
This is one more goal than the record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo, who is still stuck at 495. A little more snub for a CR7 who may never be able to come back up to his prestigious competitor, he who is now thirty-eight years old and engaged for another two years with Al-Nassr. If recent rumors indicated that the fivefold Ballon d’Or already wanted to leave Saudi Arabia to return to play in Europe, not sure that the candidates for his reception are numerous, as was already the case during the last two transfer windows.
As for Lionel Messi, his future is also mysterious. Departing from PSG where he will have stayed for two seasons, the former Barça player seems to be balanced between a Saudi challenge, an American adventure in MLS, or even a (very hypothetical) return to FC Barcelona. If this last option were to materialize, the player could then further increase his lead over CR7 at the statistical level.
