This Friday, Colombian Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) won the 19th stage, the queen stage, of the Tour of Italy alone. In the general classification, Geraint Thomas keeps his pink jersey, ahead of Primoz Roglic.
The morning break resisted until the end. However, it was the queen stage of this 2023 edition of the Tour of Italy. This Friday, Colombian Santiago Buitrago, resident of the Bahrain-Victorious cycling team, won the 19th stage of this Giro alone, at the top of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This is not a first for the main interested party, already winner of a stage on the Giro last year.
This Friday, the rider was part of the morning break, made up of a total of fifteen riders. Along with Canadian Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech), who finished second in a stage, for the fourth time since the start of this edition.
Almeida, big loser of the day
In terms of the general classification, the pink jersey remains on the shoulders of Briton Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). The latter lost, despite everything, three short seconds, after being attacked by his runner-up, namely the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). At the level of this same general classification, the big loser of the day is none other than the Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates)still third but now nearly a minute from first place.
On the French side, everything is going well for Thibaut Pinot. The Frenchman, ninth in today’s stage, is sixth overall. Above all, the resident of the French cycling group Groupama-FDJ has consolidated his blue jersey for best climber. However, nothing is decided in this Tour of Italy. Especially since the long-awaited time trial on the Monte Lussari hill is looming this Saturday.
