This Tuesday, the Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) won the 16th stage of the Tour of Italy in a sprint. His dolphin of the day, the Briton Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), takes the pink jersey from the Frenchman Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ).
The 2023 edition of the Tour of Italy has been turned upside down again. This Tuesday, the 16th stage of the Giro was won, at the top of Monte Bondone, by the Portuguese João Almeida. The resident of the Emirati cycling team UAE Team Emirates, for his very first stage victory on a grand tour, had the last word, in the sprint, in front of the Briton Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), who lost a new teammate, in the person of the French Pavel Sivakov, forced to retire. The winner of the 2018 edition of the Tour de France, who followed the winner of the day less than five kilometers from the finish, consoles himself in a very nice way. Insofar as he recovers the pink jersey of leader of the general classification of this prestigious cycling event, having already worn it for a total of four days.
Pinot dropped
The French Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), the carrier of this one, did not finally hold on during the final ascent, despite a good resistance for this first mountain stage of this third and last week of racing. In third place in today’s stage, we find the Slovenian Primoz Roglic. The member of the Jumbo-Visma team found himself unable to follow the duo, to try to play for the final victory. And with the bonuses, on arrival, he concedes them almost 30 seconds. As for the best Frenchman of the day, it is Thibaut Pinot. The Habs cracked nine kilometers from the finish. By crossing the line with a delay of more than three minutes, the leader of the French cycling team Groupama-FDJ is certainly saying goodbye to his hopes of doing well in the general classification.
