Holger Rune knocked out Novak Djokovic in the Rome Masters 1000 quarter-finals in three sets, in a match that was interrupted by rain. The Dane will now challenge Casper Ruud or Francisco Cerundolo in the semi-finals, while the Serb has not really reassured eleven days before the start of Roland-Garros.
Neither the world n°1 nor the n°2 will be present in the last four of the Masters 1000 in Rome! The odds were high, and yet… After Carlos Alcaraz on Monday in the round of 16, it was Novak Djokovic who took the door on Wednesday in the quarter-finals. His executioner: Holger Rune, who had already been in the final of the last Rolex Paris Masters.
The Dane, world No. 7, won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in 2:16, after a match that was interrupted by rain in the second set, and where he took the beak with the referee Mohamed Lahyani, who was mistaken on a trace of ball. This did not prevent the 20-year-old from winning and reaching the last four, for his very first participation in the Masters 1000 in Rome (then 42nd in the world, he lost in the first qualifying round last year).
