Largely left behind by Barça in La Liga this season, Real Madrid would however be the leader without video assistance.
It was the Spanish sports daily Marca which set out to record all the arbitration decisions taken with the help of the VAR. Whether they were favorable or unfavorable to the two behemoths of La Liga: FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. And according to the publication’s conclusions, the 12-point difference between the two teams after 27 matchdays would simply not exist without the video assistance.
If the VAR had not indeed allowed to cancel or validate certain goals, Real would display five more units on the counter, when Barça would have seven less. The two clubs would thus have 64 points each, but with a goal difference favorable to Madrid who have the advantage in direct confrontation with a 3-1 victory at the Bernabeu and a 2-1 loss at the Camp Nou.

The last Clasico in question
Marca cites as an example in particular the latest Clasico, which could have ended with a parity score (2-2) without the video tool to guide the refereeing body. The Blaugrana’s wins at Valencia and Bilbao could have otherwise resulted in a draw and a narrow loss respectively. As for the Merengues, they would probably have won at Betis or against Girona without the VAR.
