Despite his good performance in Paris-Nice, David Gaudu is not able to win the Tour de France on a regular basis, believes Cyrille Guimard.
With a duel between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, the last two winners of the Tour de France, and a Frenchman like David Gaudu who did more than play referees, Paris-Nice offered a spectacular race, rich in lessons. With an evidence, that a runner particularly dominates this beginning of the season.
“Pogacar’s demonstrations are still impressive, and this in the face of more than serious opposition, with in particular a David Gaudu who has gone up a notch. But Pogacar, he is out of competition there, he is untouchable today ”thus judged Cyrille Guimard in his column for Cyclism’Actu.
Pogacar stronger than ever
The “Druide” really liked the week of David Gaudu, who has asserted himself as the leader of Groupama-FDJ, at the expense of Arnaud Démare and Thibaut Pinot in particular, and who is even the best French rider at present. The Breton climber dominated Vingegaard, the outgoing winner of the Tour de France, during the main summit finish at Col de la Couillole.
Is that enough to make him a contender for final victory in the Grande Boucle? “The question that kills (laughs)! Objectively no, but I know riders who had less talent than him and who won the Tour de France“, replies Guimard, who therefore thinks that Gaudu could only win the Tour by taking advantage of the glitches of the other favorites.
