Finalist of the Monterrey tournament, Caroline Garcia is still world No. 5 in the WTA rankings, but she has moved closer to the fourth, Ons Jabeur.
Two “small” tournaments were on the program last week, the WTA 250 in Monterrey in Mexico and Austin in the United States, so this did not bring any major upheavals in the rankings on Monday. Thus, no change is to be reported in the Top 20.
However, it should be noted that the world n°5, Caroline Garcia, got closer to the n°4, Ons Jabeur. Finalist of the Monterrey tournament, the French gleaned only 70 points, because she lost at the same time the 110 points of her semi-final in Lyon last year, the tournament having taken place later than this year. But Garcia, who could have become world No. 4 in the event of a victory in the final in Mexico, finds himself just 16 points behind Jabeur.
Change in a month?
It is now the two big tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami that are on the menu for the best players in the world, and the ranking could change within a month. Indeed, the world n°1 Iga Swiatek has 2000 points to defend since she had achieved the magnificent West Coast-East Coast double. Aryna Sabalenka, world No. 2, has 20 (she had lost entry in California and Florida), world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 400 and world No. 4 Ons Jabeur 130.
As for Caroline Garcia, she will only have 45 points to defend. Beaten in the second round in Indian Wells last year by Emma Raducanu, she then gave up in the first round in Miami due to her foot injury, which forced her to stop for a month and a half. We know the rest…
Note that the winner of the Monterrey tournament, Donna Vekic, gained eight places to find herself 23rd, and that the winner of the Austin tournament, Marta Kostyuk, gained twelve places to find herself 40th. Apart from Garcia, only one Frenchwoman appears in the Top 100: Alizé Cornet (68th). But they are four to get closer: Océane Dodin (102nd), Clara Burel (107th), Diane Parry (111th) and Léolia Jeanjean (112th).
