Despite their 2-1 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk, this Thursday evening in the Europa League play-offs, Rennes were eliminated after the penalty shootout (4 tab 5).
A week after their defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk (2-1) in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16, Rennes dominated these same Ukrainians in their Roazhon Park (2-1). The qualification was thus played out during the penalty shootout, which turned in favor of the visitors (4 tab 5).
After a big start to the game and intense pressure, the Rennais failed to confirm their good intentions and were almost punished by Shakhtar, who shook the net through Traoré, but this goal finally was refused by the VAR following a hand (22nd).
Belocian’s blunder is expensive
After a lack of success during the first 45 minutes, Bruno Genesio’s men ended up finding the fault thanks to his Cameroonian striker Karl Toko Ekambi (1-0, 52nd), already a scorer in the first leg. An achievement that sent both teams into overtime.
Dominating during extra time against blunt Ukrainians, the Bretons logically doubled the bet thanks to Salah (2-0, 106th). And while the Rouge et Noir were holding their qualification, Belocian missed his clearance, deceiving at the same time Mandanda (2-1, 119th) and sending the two teams to penalties. A session won by Shakthar after three missed Rennes. Like Monaco and Nantes, Rennes will therefore not see the round of 16 of the C3.
