In the new ATP ranking, published on Monday, Novak Djokovic retains his 5th place despite his title in Adelaide. Benjamin Bonzi, after his first final on Saturday in Pune, climbed to 50th place, while Gaël Monfils, still at a standstill, fell to 83rd position. And the French number 1 bib goes again to Adrian Mannarino.
Having reached the final of an ATP tournament for the first time in his young career on Saturday in Pune (India), Benjamin Bonzi (26) would obviously have liked to lift the winner’s trophy, after the final against Tallon Griekspoor. Unfortunately for the Gardois, it was the Dutchman who had the last word in three sets (he progressed by 34 places to find himself 61st on Monday). A defeat all the more regrettable for Lionel Zimbler’s protege as he knew that if successful, he would find himself 40th and thus become number 1 in France, again for the first time in his life as a tennis player. Finally, thanks to his three places won, it is again Adrian Mannarino who is this Monday the highest ranked Frenchman (43rd), two rows ahead of Arthur Rinderknech, who is down a notch (45th). Bonzi also performs a very fine operation, but not as much as he could have hoped. 44th in his best ranking so far, the semi-finalist in Marseille and Mallorca last season returns to the Top 50, with a jump of ten places which allows him to climb to 50th position.
Monfils collapses
Gael Monfils, he never stops backing down. At the new ranking, the former member of the Top 10 even tumbles. Winner in January 2022 in Adelaide, where he did not come to defend his title last week, “La Monf'”, who decided not to participate in the Australian Open so as not to lose his protected classification, fell of 31 seats. The Parisian is now 83rd. Novak Djokovic succeeded him on Sunday in the Australian tournament. The Serb, winner of his 92nd title on the circuit, pocketed 250 points in passing. The former world number 1, who will have no points to defend in Melbourne, where he will aim for a 10th crown, is getting closer to Stefanos Tsitsipas but nevertheless remains 5th, behind the Greek and the leading trio composed of Carlos Alcaraz, forced to withdraw from the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal, seeded number 1 in the tournament, and Casper Ruud.
