Beaten Thursday by Switzerland’s Breel Embolo (1-0) for its entry into the 2022 World Cup, Cameroon signed an eighth defeat in a row in the competition.
The two nations had never faced each other, regardless of the competition. This Thursday, Switzerland and Cameroon therefore met for the first time on the same green rectangle, on the occasion of their respective debuts in the 2022 World Cup. If the debates were particularly balanced, it was ultimately the Nati who was able to pull out of the game by winning the smallest gap (1-0)thanks to Breel Embolo.
The Indomitable Lions were the first to show themselves at the forefront with a huge double chance signed Bryan Mbeumo and Karl Toko Ekambi (10th). A quarter of an hour later, Collins Fai just missed the target (26th). The Swiss gradually woke up and finished the first period well, in turn offering themselves a goal opportunity that was finally wasted by a slightly crossed header from Manuel Akanji (45th + 1).
Embolo does not celebrate
No goal at the break, but a scenario that was unlocked shortly after returning from the locker room. As a symbol, it was Breel Embolo, a native of Cameroon but naturalized Swiss, who scored for his adopted country (1-0, 48th). A goal that the AS Monaco striker did not celebrate. But quite a breath of fresh air for his team who generally mastered his subject during the end of the game.
Admittedly, there were still chances on both sides, like this header from André Zambo Anguissa (66th) followed a few seconds later by the Swiss response with a shot from Ruben Vargas masterfully deflected on the ground by André Onana ( 66th), then a recovery from Breel Embolo just above the bar (67th). But in the end, success is indeed for Switzerland (1-0), while Cameroon sinks into a black series.
Close to the sad Mexican record
The Indomitable Lions sign there an eighth loss in a row in a final phase of the World Cup. Only Mexico is worse with nine consecutive losses (between 1930 and 1958). In the Group G standings, Switzerland is temporarily in the lead, while its victim of the day brings up the rear. We will have to wait until Wednesday evening to know the result of the match between the two other members of this pool: Brazil and Serbia.
