Milan Vader was rushed to hospital in Bilbao after crashing hard during the fifth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country on Friday. The Jumbo-Visma team says his condition is stable.
Less than a month after Sonny Colbrelli’s heart attack, the cycling world is once again shaken up. This Friday, during the fifth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, Milan Vader (26), Dutch rider member of the Jumbo-Visma team, went over a safety barrier in a descent, 100 kilometers from the finish. A few hours after the accident, his training brought reassuring news about his state of health. ” We would like to inform you that his situation is stable.. Milan receives very good medical care at the University Medical Hospital of Bilbao. An update will be shared tomorrow (Saturday),” the Dutch team posted on their social media. The Batavian daily General Newspaper reveals, however, that Primoz Roglic’s teammate was transported to this hospital in Bilbao “in critical condition”.

A broken collarbone, vertebrae and shoulder blade
Affected in the carotid arteries, Vader was immediately operated on to have stents placed and thus prevent them from narrowing a little more. Also presenting with a broken collarbone, vertebrae and scapula, he was placed in an artificial coma to preserve his good brain function. Jumbo-Visma’s doctor, Robert Kempers, is at his side. This accident inevitably recalls that of Remco Evenepoel, author of a fall of ten meters on a bridge during the Tour of Lombardy in August 2020. Milan Vader is participating in his first season as a road cyclist. He has made a name for himself in recent years in mountain biking, with three Dutch cross-country championship titles (2019, 2020, 2021), a bronze medal at the European Championships (2019) and a 10th place at the Olympic race in Tokyo in 2020.
