While the France team was led 1-0 after Portugal’s opener by Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema took responsibility for hitting the penalty obtained by Kylian Mbappé. And this while the hierarchy of shooters in the Blues had not been clearly established by Didier Deschamps.
Benzema, who had missed a penalty in preparation against Wales, did not tremble to beat Rui Patricio and equalize for the Blues (1-1, 45th + 2). His goal allows the men of Didier Deschamps, manhandled during this first period, to return to the locker room while still being virtually first in Group F.
